At Gideon Optics, our goal has always been to design optics that meet real-world demands, not just look good on paper. With our newest release of the Gideon Mediator II red dot, we’ve pushed further than ever before. This isn’t simply an upgrade to our original Mediator. It’s a complete rethinking of what a closed-emitter pistol optic can be.
The Mediator II offers a unique inverted design, a larger and more forgiving window, and levels of strength we haven’t seen in a pistol optic before. It’s not built for everyone; it’s built for shooters who value durability and field performance above all else.
We’ve put together a full overview video available for those who want to see the Mediator II in action:
A Redesigned Housing for a Lower Deck Height
The Mediator II changes how enclosed pistol optics are built. By inverting the design (placing the emitter and battery at the top), the optic achieves symmetry on both sides while lowering the viewing window closer to the slide. This improves co-witness potential with iron sights without requiring excessively tall aftermarket sights.
This design also allows for a larger square viewing window (18.8mm tall x 21.4mm wide), nearly the size of micro rifle optics. This provides a generous and forgiving sight picture uncommon in closed-emitter pistol dots.
Built to Withstand Extreme Conditions
When we say the Mediator II is strong, we mean it. The optic uses dual sacrificial glass elements (one front, one rear) to protect the sealed interior lens and emitter from dirt, debris, and impact. The housing is nitrogen purged to prevent internal fogging and ensure reliability in extreme environments.
What truly sets the Mediator II apart are the stainless steel armor plates mounted on each side of the optic. These side plates add a new level of durability to an already robust 7075-T6 aluminum body. The trade-off is weight; at 3.2 ounces, it’s heavier than most pistol dots. For many shooters, that added durability is worth the extra mass.
ACRO Footprint with Included Riser Mount
We chose the ACRO style footprint for the Mediator II because it’s one of the strongest mounting solutions available. Its cross-lug design handles recoil forces effectively, protecting screws from unnecessary stress during slide reciprocation.
The Mediator II also comes standard with an absolute co-witness riser mount, making it well-suited not just for pistols but also for pistol-caliber carbines (PCCs) or compact rifles where a larger window and enclosed design excel.
Selectable Reticle and Practical Controls
The Mediator II includes a selectable reticle system offering three options:
- 3 MOA dot for precision
- 28 MOA circle for fast target acquisition
- Circle-dot hybrid for versatility
Brightness controls are positioned on the right side for intuitive adjustment, and the optic features standard shake-to-awake technology: ready when you need it and conserving power when you don’t. A top-loading CR2032 battery makes battery changes quick and simple without the need to remove the optic or re-zero.
Performance Considerations
All this durability and the large viewing window come with trade-offs. At 3.2 ounces, the Mediator II is heavier than many traditional pistol dots. For most defensive ammunition and standard grip technique, this added mass is a non-issue, but shooters who rely on ultra-light competition loads or have an exceptionally loose grip may experience cycling issues on certain platforms.
The Mediator II also isn’t the most concealable optic we’ve ever built. Its larger footprint and armored plates make it better suited for duty, range, or competition use rather than deep-concealment applications.
A Purpose-Built Optic for Serious Shooters
The Mediator II isn’t about being the smallest or lightest red dot; it’s about being the toughest and most forgiving to use. With its unique inverted design, large window, dual sacrificial glass elements, stainless steel armor, and ACRO-based mounting system, it’s built for shooters who demand an optic that keeps working when conditions are at their worst.
Whether you’re setting it up on a duty pistol, PCC, or lightweight rifle, the Mediator II delivers durability and performance in one package.
